Snuggling

Sunday, 0559
I am sleeping peacefully in the recliner.

0600
The alarm on my phone chimes. As always, I press the + a couple times and then snooze.  Some days that is the best fifteen minutes of sleep I get.

0602
Damain crawls into my lap. Uh oh!  Is he sick? No fever; that’s a good thing.  He snuggles in and we sleep soundly.

0615
The phone chimes again. Ah … no reason to get up in a hurry to do things; we have no appointments Monday morning.  Hit the snooze one more time.

0615 and less than 30 seconds later
Monday?!  It’s not Monday.  It’s Sunday and I DO have places to go and things to do.

But while I rest a few more minutes, my mind starts to wander. I’ve often heard the phrase “crawl up into Daddy God’s lap” referring to a time the person needs a close time of prayer. (Aside – I just had to explain to Damain why jumping on a sleeping person is a bad idea.  But I digress.  Let us get back to earlier thoughts.)  The majority of the times I hear this phrase is when the person is in distress. BUT God didn’t spend centuries making a way for us to have a personal relationship with him just so we could run to him when we are troubled. He wants a relationship with us ALL the time. Just like Damain had no particular need when he crawled into my lap, God wants us to come to him “just because.”

0620
I wriggle out of the recliner.  Damain snuggles under the blanket, mumbling something I can’t quite make out.  I quietly tell him that he can sleep some more. Before I can finish making a cup of tea, he is up and wanting an English muffin with honey and cinnamon. I am determined to get these thoughts typed this morning.

0650
I have typed this much. It seems there was something else I wanted to say, but I must get busy since I want to feed us all, shower and dress, and get to church with an unhurried attitude.

However your day is going, remember that God wants to hear from you. Maybe you are alone and wondering what you will do all day.  Maybe you are in the midst of tornadic toddler tantrums.  Maybe you are questioning how any teenagers ever survive until adulthood. Maybe your parents or other loved ones have become as your children. Maybe you are surrounded by calm people who are doing just what they need to do every morning. And maybe, like me, you just dealt with “He touched my stuff!”  God cares about it all. Call out to him – loudly or quietly. When Jesus said he would be with us always, he meant it.
